* Chemical by-products in tap water are increasing the risk of birth defects and pregnant women

* Women who lived in areas with high concentrations of trihalomethanes in drinking water had a 22% greater risk of having a baby with a birth defect when compared with women in areas with lower concentrations.

* Heart problems were the most likely defect.

* Professor Phillip Weinstein, from UWA’s school o population health, said developing foetus was very sensitive to environmental toxins.

* He said more study was needed and if the extra research supported the group’s findings, pregnant women in some suburbs may need to be advised to drink only bottled or filtered water.

* Perth tap water may pose risk to unborn babies

* University researchers warned after finding elevated nitrate levels

* Called term pre-labour rupture of membranes (PROM), the condition occurs when pregnancy has reached full turn. It can effect up to 10% of pregnancies and now can be dangerous because without protective membranes the baby can be exposed to infection.

* High nitrate levels include Neerabup, Two Rocks, Whitfords, Yanchep, Mt Hawthorn and Greenmount.

- Last year, after the second driest winter to hit Perth and record low dam inflows, water levels at the Mundaring dam are sitting at 37% and falling.

- Predictions by the Water Corporation suggest dams like Mundaring might become nothing more than a storage facility for the desalinated and recycled water.

- Drinking water is evaporating as fast as the water within their walls.

- Developing new water sources, particularly desalination plants, increasing the amount of recycled water including aquifer recharge, and reining in per capita use.

- There’s 10% reduction in rainfall equating to a 50% fall in stream flow.

- The city can no longer rely so heavily on groundwater resources such as the Gnangara Mound, which provides more than half of Perth’s drinking supplies.

- Recycling is also identifies as crucial to underpinning Perth’s water needs, with the draft plan saying at least 30% of all wastewater should be recycled by 2030, up from 6% now.

Gnangara Groundwater Level

Groundwater levels across the Gnangara Mound have generally been in decline for the last thirty years. This coincides with a general trend of declining annual rainfall across the south west of Western Australia. Groundwater level measurements have been recorded and averaged to produce a single average figure per month. Groundwater levels depicted on the graph are based on data taken from over 50 bores located across the mound’s superficial aquifer. These bores were selected from the existing monitoring network on the Gnangara Mound, located between the Swan River in the south and Gingin Brook in the north with a minimum of ten years of data.

To achieve the single monthly average figure, monthly water levels are offset against the highest historically recorded groundwater level for each bore. These offset monthly water levels are then averaged across all the selected 50 bores to produce a single number. This single number represents relative groundwater level change across the Gnangara Mound compared to the average highest recorded groundwater level.
